Research aim: ANALYSE THE FEASIBILITY OF A CYCLE AND WALKING CENTRE IN COLEFORD, ENSURING STRONG LINKS TO REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CYCLE AND WALKING ROUTES.
THE CLIENT: COLEFORD TOWN COUNCIL
THE TEAM: AARON WOODWARD, CHANEL GOODMAN, ELLIS UTTLEY AND MARCUS COOPER.
Coleford is located at the heart of the Forest of Dean and in close proximity to the Wye Valley and Welsh border. There are a lot of existing cycle and walking facilities and routes within the wider region. Within the Coleford parish, there are a range of tourist attractions and historical assets, as well as plenty of local independent businesses. By introducing a Cycle and Walking Centre and improving connection to the wider region, the client wished to increase tourism and footfall within the town centre, as well as reduce traffic congestion and provide opportunities for young people.
In order to address these issues, a group of UWE MArch Students worked closely with Coleford Town Council as part of a ‘live project’. Engagement with the local community formed a large part of the project. A design puzzle ensured stakeholders were able to share ideas of facilities for a Cycle and Walking Centre. This included a bike workshop and hire, hostel accommodation, communal seating, and outdoor space. These facilities were proposed within a potential site in the town centre reinforcing connections to the rich heritage and unique location for the benefit of tourists and the local community.
